So I watched the pilot of Glee about a year and a half ago, after hearing all the buzz about it. I thought it was stupid. Whatever. Since then, as everyone knows, it’s blown up. PEOPLE ARE SO INTO GLEE. Didn’t it win a bunch of Emmys? Or something? Sure, it’s on Fox, but so was Arrested Development. I figured I’d give it another chance. They’d had an entire season to improve since the pilot, maybe I’d judged too harshly. After all, I like music. Watching college acapella videos of indie rock songs on Youtube is a very guilty (albeit rarely-indulged) pleasure of mine.
I just watched the Season 2 premiere and I can’t even make it through. What an awful, awful show. It’s just High School Musical without any original songs, so in a way it’s even worse, and that’s saying something. Why does America go apeshit for such commercialized, simplistic schlock?
And Community, one of the smartest, funniest shows on television right now, is on the chopping block? What have we become?
